I don't have a school-aged child yet, but last week was the first week at daycare that, when it was time to go home, Rabbit actually tried to grab as many toys as possible as if to say, "If I have to go, so do all these things!" Was she ransoming the toys, I wonder? I'm doing my best to focus on how much fun she must be having there, but I will admit some mommy-privilege and note that I'm taking it somewhat personally.

It's pretty remarkable to watch them negotiate things on their own, when they don't think we're there...and how much it all changes as soon as they see we ARE there! It shows how much capacity they do have to work out many of these things, and how much we can actually interfere with things going well.

(I'd love to think they need us every step of the way, but the sad -- and wonderful -- truth is that they often get along JUST FINE without us!)

;(

Today was the first day of kindergarten over here, and there was a little boy totally upset and clinging to Mom before school. But as soon as she left -- guess what? He had a great day. (Poor Mom spent the day wringing her hands, worrying that he was too young to start school, that he would be crying the whole day...but at pickup, he was GREAT!)

I remember when my daughter started kindergarten and the principal had a meeting for all new parents. She said that when kids have disagreements, the first course of action was to instruct them to work it out between themselves. I had never even considered that five year olds we capable of that! Kids can handle situations much better than we give them credit for. To be honest, I think we adults could learn a few lessons from THEM in how to handle conflicts (and how to NOT hold grudges).
