Love the suggestions. The only problem is that so many of these bathrooms have multiple stalls -- and the loud flushes still startle our little ones, even if they're not in the stall that's flushing. Understanding that little kids have wild imaginations -- and can't really hold onto our reasonable explanations yet -- helps us to get through this time a little more patiently. Believe me, I've been there for over 10 years now, waiting for various children of mine to get through this stage! There's a lot to be said for going potty before leaving the house, wearing pullups when going out while potty training, and for those little portable potties that you use with trash bags that you can store in the trunk of your car. The less pressure, the better!

In a jam - where the only available toi-tie is of the auto-variety: carry a small supply of sticky-notes and cover the auto-eye. (Learned this from a mom to a child with autism.)

My 3.5 year old is terrified of the hand dryers and auto-flushers. I have to flush all potties in public and I try to avoid the autopotties.

If your son is afraid the potty will clog, is that only for poop or pee too? Does he stand to pee? My little guy was much more willing to pee at the potty when he had a choice to stand. Of course, he still won't poop on the darn thing.

My friend's little girl was just terrified of those auto-flushers - and even some of the manual ones because they were just so loud! The hand dryers too - I get startled sometimes!
